Accessibility Statement

CultureObserver.uk, operated by Sliema Media Limited (Malta Business Registry company number C 84217, registered office Level 3, Tower Business Centre, Tower Street, Swatar, Birkirkara BKR 4013, Malta), is committed to making its digital publication usable by everyone, including readers who rely on assistive technologies such as screen readers, voice recognition software and keyboard-only navigation. We recognise that accessible design is essential to serving our UK and international audiences who depend on our showbiz news, television and streaming coverage, celebrity profiles, interviews and cultural analysis.

Who is responsible for accessibility at CultureObserver.uk?

Vanessa Shaw, Editor-in-Chief, has overall responsibility for accessibility policy and standards at CultureObserver.uk, with Patrick Nolan, Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, managing day-to-day compliance. The publication is owned and operated by Sliema Media Limited (company number C 84217, registered in Malta), with its registered office at Level 3, Tower Business Centre, Tower Street, Swatar, Birkirkara BKR 4013, Malta. Both editors can be contacted via our editorial team for accessibility-related matters.

Our editorial team includes Adam Pryor (Managing Editor), Isabelle Reed (TV & Streaming Editor), Leon Carter (Celebrity & Royals Editor) and Grace Hollis (Film & Music Editor), all of whom are instructed on accessibility best practices for content production. The commercial operations of Sliema Media Limited — including display advertising, affiliate links and sponsored content — are managed separately but are required to respect the same accessibility standards where technically feasible. Further information about our structure can be found on our About Us page.

What is our conformance target?

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA, which is aligned with the European standard EN 301 549. This target applies to all content on CultureObserver.uk, including showbiz news, television and streaming coverage, celebrity profiles, interviews and cultural analysis. We selected WCAG 2.2 Level AA because it represents a robust, internationally recognised benchmark that balances comprehensive coverage with practical implementability for a digital entertainment publication of our size.

Our conformance target covers all pages within the cultureobserver.uk domain, including editorial articles, opinion pieces, explainers, image galleries and video content that we produce directly. Third-party embedded content and advertising units are subject to separate consideration, as outlined in the known limitations section below. We review our conformance status annually and publish updates on this Accessibility Statement page.

What are we doing to improve accessibility?

We implement a range of measures: semantic HTML structure, full keyboard navigation with visible focus indicators, text alternatives for all editorial images, sufficient colour contrast ratios, responsive text resizing up to 200 per cent, and support for reduced-motion preferences declared in system settings. These measures are applied consistently across all editorial content published on CultureObserver.uk, from television and streaming news to royal coverage and red-carpet reporting.

Our website uses properly nested heading levels, landmark regions and descriptive link text to ensure that screen readers can navigate content logically. All editorial images, charts and graphics receive meaningful alt text that conveys the same information as the visual element. Colour contrast ratios meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA thresholds for both normal and large text, and we avoid using colour alone to convey information. Text can be resized up to 200 per cent without loss of content or functionality, and we respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query to disable non-essential animations. Every piece of editorial content is reviewed by a human editor, and our digital tools — which may support research, formatting, metadata, headline options and transcription — are never permitted to fabricate quotes, sources or bylines, as detailed in our AI & Automation Policy. All commercial and sponsored material is clearly labelled, and affiliate links are disclosed, as set out in our Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure.

What known limitations exist?

Some third-party embedded content — including social media feeds, video players, advertising units and interactive maps — may not be fully accessible because these elements are served by external providers whose accessibility standards are outside our direct control. We label our own content diligently but cannot guarantee the same for third-party embeds, which are used to enhance our coverage of UK television, streaming, film and celebrity culture.

Advertising, which helps fund our operations alongside affiliate links and commercial partnerships, is served by networks that may use technologies not fully compliant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We encourage users who encounter barriers with third-party content to report the issue to us so that we can raise it with the provider. We also note that some older editorial articles may contain legacy formatting that does not fully meet current accessibility standards; these are being reviewed as part of our ongoing improvement work. Our Editorial Policy and Sponsored Content Policy provide further context on how third-party material is managed.

How can I report an accessibility problem?

If you experience any difficulty accessing content on CultureObserver.uk, please email accessibility@cultureobserver.uk with a description of the problem, the URL where you encountered it, and the assistive technology or browser you are using. We acknowledge all reports within five working days and aim to provide a substantive response or resolution within ten working days.

You may also contact Patrick Nolan, Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, directly at patrick.nolan@cultureobserver.uk or via our general contact form at Contact Us. For complaints that relate to editorial content, accuracy or privacy, please refer to our Complaints Procedure or Celebrity Privacy Policy. We treat every report seriously and will work with you to identify a solution, whether that involves providing content in an alternative format, fixing a technical barrier or escalating the issue to the relevant third party.

What enforcement route is available?

If you are not satisfied with the response you receive from CultureObserver.uk, you may escalate your concern to the Malta Business Registry, given that Sliema Media Limited is registered in Malta (company number C 84217), or to the Equality and Human Rights Commission for UK-based readers under the Equality Act 2010. We will cooperate fully with any enforcement body that has jurisdiction over our accessibility obligations.

For readers in Malta, the Malta Communications Authority oversees digital accessibility compliance. For readers in other jurisdictions, we recommend contacting your national equality or human rights body. We will provide any information necessary to support an investigation. Our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy govern the legal framework for using CultureObserver.uk, and nothing in this statement reduces your statutory rights. We are committed to resolving all accessibility concerns constructively and transparently.
