Culture Observer is published by Sliema Media Limited, a private company registered in Malta (company number C 84217). The site is funded through a combination of display advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, sponsored content, newsletter sponsorships and content licensing. Full details of our ownership and funding are available on our Ownership & Funding page.
Who is responsible for Culture Observer’s commercial operations and advertising sales?
Sliema Media Limited is the operating company behind Culture Observer, and its editorial and commercial teams are operationally separate. Advertising sales, affiliate partnerships and sponsored content are managed by dedicated commercial staff who have no influence over editorial decisions.
The commercial team handles all display advertising inventory, affiliate programme management and partnership agreements. Editorial staff, including Editor-in-Chief Vanessa Shaw and Standards Lead Patrick Nolan, have no role in selling or negotiating commercial placements. This separation is documented in our Editorial Policy and is audited internally to ensure that advertising never dictates coverage.
How does Culture Observer use affiliate links and where do disclosures appear?
Affiliate links are used within some articles and reviews, allowing Culture Observer to earn a small commission when readers make a purchase through those links without any extra cost to the reader. These links are clearly disclosed at the point of use, typically at the top of an article or immediately before the first affiliate link.
Standard disclosure language reads: “This article contains affiliate links; we may earn a commission if you click and make a purchase.” The disclosure appears in a prominent position, often in bold or italicised text, and is repeated if multiple affiliate links are used throughout the piece. Sponsored content that includes affiliate links carries an additional label indicating the commercial relationship. Our Sponsored Content Policy provides further detail.
Does advertising ever determine editorial conclusions or story selection?
No. Advertising, sponsorship and commercial relationships never determine editorial conclusions, story selection or the tone of our reporting. This is a core principle enshrined in our Editorial Policy and enforced by the editorial leadership team.
Display advertising is served programmatically or through direct sales, but in all cases the commercial team operates independently. Sponsored content is clearly labelled as such and is reviewed by the Standards & Fact-Checking Lead to ensure it meets editorial guidelines. No advertiser or partner is permitted to review or approve editorial content before publication. Readers can report any perceived conflict of interest via compliance@cultureobserver.uk.
How can I contact the advertising, affiliate or partnerships teams?
Enquiries about advertising, affiliate partnerships or commercial collaborations should be sent to advertising@cultureobserver.uk, affiliate@cultureobserver.uk or partnerships@cultureobserver.uk. Our general Contact page provides additional details for other queries.
The commercial team aims to respond within two business days. For legal or compliance matters related to advertising, contact legal@cultureobserver.uk. Editorial enquiries, including corrections and complaints, should be directed to editorial@cultureobserver.uk rather than the commercial addresses.
Our commitments
- We clearly label all advertising, sponsored content and affiliate links so that readers can distinguish commercial material from independent journalism.
- Affiliate links are always accompanied by a disclosure that explains how they work and that we may earn a commission.
- Commercial relationships never influence editorial conclusions, story selection or the tone of our reporting.
- Our editorial and commercial teams operate independently, with no cross-over in decision-making or performance incentives.
- We review and update this policy annually, and whenever significant changes occur, to maintain transparency with our audience.
